Why a group of church members met with Ed Davey, leader of the Lib Dems, and what happened, by Christine Thompson
Last year, before the General Election, Christian Aid launched an initiative called ‘Break bread with your MP’. It encouraged Christians to engage with their MPs and build links, focusing on action on poverty through climate justice, debt cancellation, and diplomacy to bring peace around the world.
The Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT) also encourages churches to engage with their MP. When the election brought in a lot of new MPs, it made this even more important.
In Kingston URC, we already have a good relationship with our MP, Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats – but I didn’t want him to feel left out. Our church meeting approved the idea and I drafted a letter from the church, which was signed by the Minister and Church Secretary.
