An ecumenical project in Flintshire shows the benefit of keeping things simple
Food with Friends has kept going for nearly ten years, thanks not least to its simple premise: a meal every Tuesday for whoever wants it. The simplicity does not stop it being a demanding commitment: every Tuesday means every Tuesday, even if it is Christmas Day.
Ten years ago, a group of churches in Shotton, Flintshire, got together to discuss how they might address increasing food poverty. They considered a food bank or pantry, but decided to provide a two-course hot lunch for all comers at Rivertown URC….
Food with Friends was awarded £2,000 in the 2025 United Reformed Church Community Project Awards, sponsored by Congregational. urc.org.uk/awards
