Sheila Maxey – On the pilgrim way: Called to be faithful
At my ordination, David Dale, the preacher, told me firmly that I was not called to be successful, only faithful.
My father was a passionate Christian and a passionate pacifist. His daily “quiet time” and our family prayers were of central importance. He played a leading role in planning mission weeks to the city, and did some open-air preaching of the Gospel on summer Sunday evenings. During the war he was honorary secretary of the Scottish Fellowship of Reconciliation and supported conscientious objectors when they appeared before their tribunals. Sunday by Sunday he struggled to preach the Word with integrity in the light of that week’s news. Because of his pacifist stance several members left. When he moved on in the early 1950s, the congregation joined with a nearby one and the building was demolished.
