Commitment-Phobe: Advent challenge, day 11

Commitment-Phobe: Advent challenge, day 11

On 11 December, the Advent Challenge was focused on switching off from technology and the unnecessary mind-clutter it brings, and instead feeding our minds. The challenges were:

  • Try to have a gadget detox for a few hours today
  • Have a tech-free dinner around the table
  • Go for a walk with friends

I chose number one, but intended to make the challenge an all-day thing – I cheated! I played music on my computer and I went on Facebook to show my friend a photo, but I did get a few hours tech free and I did indeed also go for a walk with a friend.

If the aim of the day was to fill my mind with the good things that God wants for us, then that is certainly what happened. Good company, cooking a meal with someone, a walk, a talk and a shared prayer. My spiritual well was filled.

Perhaps instead of fasting from food, I should have a monthly day of fasting from tech. Good things happen.
